Could you go sober for a million pounds? We all have our very own lockdown stories don't we? Having to suddenly learn the timetables again. Getting fat. Getting thin! Remembering how to NOT buy things online and speak to humans in shops again! Mine was realising alcohol was taking over my life! Sparkling wine with lunch got earlier and earlier. Fleetwood Mac was played on repeat and showering was for losers. Dippy things with endless amounts of crisps were rammed constantly into my mouth and I ate white bread. Actual white bread!The kids got so used to the word "yeah" and it was a huge shock to their system when the word "no" was reintroduced.But I had to get a grip.This has inspired my next book and this Podcast, Why Do I Always Drink?And I started to ask questions about alcohol consumption. Not in a judgey way. No finger-pointing here. I'm not trying to quit the drink or convince anyone else to do so. I'm just trying to understand this constant companion that's been with me since aged 12. 41 now. And the longest I've gone without a drink in all this time is about three weeks. Is that good or bad? I don't know. But I'm trying to figure it out. So I started to ask this question: Could you stop drinking alcohol for a million pounds? I'll just add a little context. The question has been framed like this; for some strange reason you get offered a million pounds but with a single condition, you can't drink alcohol again. Could you do it? Let's talk about it.
